It was a double for the Home Office and Justice Chess Club as their 2nd team beat DHSS 4th team 4.5–1.5 to lift the Post Annual Cup.

In the Bonar Law Trophy final, HOJCC beat Met Police 4.5–3.5 in what was an extremely close match. The result was in doubt until the final seconds.

The Trade and Industry chess club have renamed themselves Business and Innovation. This follows machinery of government changes which split DTI into two new departments: Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). Their new name takes effect immediately.

We are sorry to announce the death of the Treasury player David Burford. He played for the Treasury from the early 1980s to the 2006/07 season. The cause of death was cancer. As well as being a regular member of the 2nd Team, David made a significant contribution to the well-being of the Club, most notably by looking after its finances for a number of seasons, assisting in the purchase of its current sets and donating the Summer Cup. Treasury Chess Club have sent a letter of condolence to his widow, Philippa.

The London, South and South East Region qualifying competition for the CSSC National Individual Chess Championships 2008, organised by the Civil Service Chess Association, will be held at Coulsdon Chess Fellowship on Saturday 19 April starting at 11.00am. It will be a one-day rapidplay event. The top two players qualify for the National Finals in Leeds on 23–25 July. See attached entry form. Important: there must be at least six entries for the qualifying event to be valid.

Roland Smith reports that the Revenue & Customs postal chess team competed in the British Championships and finished runners-up to the British Correspondence Chess Association. This was their best result for many years. Roland himself has been nominated by England to play in the world individual championships starting this month. This event is open to players with a postal chess rating of 2400 or over. Good luck Roland!

The largest, strongest and most exciting Individual Blitz tournament in recent years ended in victory for Tony Ashby (Home Office and Justice Chess Club), who beat Robin Haldane (UNATS) 2–0 in the play-off. Tony took home the Peter Bond Memorial Trophy, which stays with the HOJCC for the fifth year in succession. The qualifying sections were very closely contested. Many thanks to Nigel Blades, who not only organised the event but also took part in it. The results are below. Detailed cross-tables are here.

The Civil Service National Finals took place in late July. Tony Ashby (Home Office and Justice) won the event with 4 / 5, ahead of a field including Ken Norman and John Wager.
