Rules for Individual Tournaments

1. Competitions shall be held for the following trophies* in each season:-
• Barstow Cup (Group 1);
• Star Trophy (Group 2);
• James Curtis Trophy (Group 3)

2. A Tournament  Controller and one or more Assistant Tournament Controllers shall be elected by the Council at the Annual General Meeting to control these tournaments in the following season. Any of the duties or functions assigned to the Tournament Controller by these Rules may be delegated by him to an Assistant Tournament Controller.

3. All members of clubs affiliated to the London Civil Service, Post Office and Municipal Chess League may enter the competitions.

4. The Tournament Controller shall place entrants into one of the competitions according to his view of their playing strength.

5. The Tournament Controller shall decide according to the number and strength of entrants the format for each competition.

6. The Tournament  Controller shall appoint the last date and time on which a game in each  round of a competition shall be started. He may at his discretion extend the time for the playing of any game or necessary  absence from town of any competitor or for any  other  similar  cause. In a Swiss Tournament no extension shall be granted beyond the final date for play of the round subsequent to that for which the extension has been granted.

7. In an American Tournament the games of any player who fails to complete half of them shall be annulled.

8. Subject to these Rules, the Tournament Controller may make any necessary regulations for each competition (covering in particular minimum length of playing sessions and date for completion of adjourned games). He shall have authority finally to determine any matter connected with the competition and not covered by the Rules or any dispute arising therefrom.

9. Each competitor shall pay an entry fee of £2.00.

* Custody of these trophies is awarded for one season only, after which they must be returned for engraving. A miniature trophy will be awarded to each outright winner for permanent retention.
